John 8:20-40 - Translation

20 ταῦτα τὰ ῥήματα ἐλάλησεν ἐν τῷ γαζοφυλακίῳ
διδάσκων ἐν τῷ ἱερῷ· καὶ οὐδεὶς ἐπίασεν αὐτόν
ὅτι οὔπω ἐληλύθει  ὥρα αὐτοῦ- All these words he spoke in the treasury guard while teaching in the temple. And no one seized him, because his hour had not come. γαζοφυλακίῳ is a hapex legomenon. Probably not the treasury chamber but the treasury of the temple. oti reason for not being seized
21 Εἶπεν οὖν πάλιν αὐτοῖς· ἐγὼ ὑπάγω καὶ ζητήσετέ με
καὶ ἐν τῇ ἁμαρτίᾳ ὑμῶν ἀποθανεῖσθε· ὅπου ἐγὼ ὑπάγω
ὑμεῖς οὐ δύνασθε ἐλθεῖνTherefore he said again to them, "I am going away and you desire me, and in your sin you will die, but where I go you are not able to come. Sin singular - the essence
22 ἔλεγον οὖν οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι· μήτι ἀποκτενεῖ ἑαυτόν,
ὅτι λέγει· ὅπου ἐγὼ ὑπάγω ὑμεῖς οὐ δύνασθε ἐλθεῖν; Therefore the Jews said, " Is he going to kill himself because he said where I go you are not able to come? Robertson points out that this is cynicalness on the Jews - because they can follow him to hell, if he killed himself.
23 καὶ ἔλεγεν αὐτοῖς·ὑμεῖς ἐκ τῶν κάτω ἐστέἐγὼ ἐκ τῶν ἄνω εἰμί·
ὑμεῖς ἐκ τοῦ κόσμου τούτου ἐστέἐγὼ οὐκ εἰμὶ ἐκ
τοῦ κόσμου τούτουAnd he said to them, "you are from below, I am from above. You are of this world, I am not of this world. - the contrast of kato and ano is not hell but earth and heaven.
24 εἶπον οὖν ὑμῖν ὅτι ἀποθανεῖσθε ἐν ταῖς ἁμαρτίαις ὑμῶν·
ἐὰν γὰρ μὴ πιστεύσητε ὅτι ἐγώ εἰμιἀποθανεῖσθε ἐν
ταῖς ἁμαρτίαις ὑμῶνTherefore I say to you that you will die in you sins, " For except you do  believe that I am, you will die in your sins. Negative condition of 3rd class with ean me and ingressive aorist active subjunctive pisteuo,  - that I am he - indirect discourse.
25 ἔλεγον οὖν αὐτῷ· σὺ τίς εἶ;
εἶπεν αὐτοῖς  Ἰησοῦς· τὴν ἀρχὴν  τι καὶ λαλῶ ὑμῖνTherefore they said to him, "Who are you?" Jesus said to them, " What have I been saying to you from the beginning?" Difficult sentence. Latin & Syriac treat it as an affirmative. West & Hort take it as an interogrative. Greeks take it as an exclamation. Robertson seem certain can not translate ten archen as from the beginning and yet he seems to anyway. Some examples in Lxx are close to the above, others in GK with neg. can mean at all or primarily essentially. ? Mass confusion.
26 πολλὰ ἔχω περὶ ὑμῶν λαλεῖν καὶ κρίνειν· ἀλλ’
πέμψας με ἀληθής ἐστινκἀγὼ  ἤκουσα παρ’ αὐτοῦ
ταῦτα λαλῶ εἰς τὸν κόσμονI have many things to speak and to judge concerning you, but the one who sent me is true, and I also which I heard from him these things I speak into the world.
27 οὐκ ἔγνωσαν ὅτι τὸν πατέρα αὐτοῖς ἔλεγενThey did not know that he spoke of the Father.
28 εἶπεν οὖν  Ἰησοῦς· ὅταν ὑψώσητε τὸν υἱὸν τοῦ ἀνθρώπου,
τότε γνώσεσθε ὅτι ἐγώ εἰμικαὶ ἀπ’ ἐμαυτοῦ ποιῶ οὐδέν
ἀλλὰ καθὼς ἐδίδαξέν με ὁ πατὴρ ταῦτα λαλῶTherefore Jesus said [them]."When you exalt the Son of Man then you will know that I am he and from myself I do nothing, but the father has taught me these things I say.
29 καὶ  πέμψας με μετ’ ἐμοῦ ἐστιν· οὐκ ἀφῆκέν με
μόνονὅτι ἐγὼ τὰ ἀρεστὰ αὐτῷ ποιῶ πάντοτεAnd the who sent me is with me. He has not left me alone, because I always the things that please him.
30 Ταῦτα αὐτοῦ λαλοῦντος πολλοὶ ἐπίστευσαν εἰς αὐτόνWhile he was speaking these thing many believed in him - autou? believed into or on him - ingressive aorist tense
31 ἔλεγενοὖν  Ἰησοῦς πρὸς τοὺς
πεπιστευκότας αὐτῷ Ἰουδαίους· ἐὰν ὑμεῖς μείνητε
ἐν τῷ λόγῳ τῷ ἐμῷ,ἀληθῶς μαθηταί μού ἐστε,  Jesus speaking to those Jews having believed in him, if you remain in my word, you are my true disciples.
32 καὶ γνώσεσθε τὴν ἀλήθειανκαὶ  ἀλήθεια ἐλευθερώσει ὑμᾶς. And you know the truth, and the truth will set you free.
33 ἀπεκρίθησαν πρὸς αὐτόν· σπέρμα Ἀβραάμ ἐσμεν
καὶ οὐδενὶ δεδουλεύκαμεν πώποτε· πῶς σὺ λέγεις
ὅτι ἐλεύθεροι γενήσεσθε; They answered him, "We are Abraham seed, and we have served as a slave to no one ever. How do you say that you have been made free."
34 ἀπεκρίθη αὐτοῖς  Ἰησοῦς· ἀμὴν ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν
ὅτι πᾶς ὁ ποιῶν τὴν ἁμαρτίαν δοῦλός ἐστιν τῆς ἁμαρτίας. Jesus answered them, "verily, truly, I say to you all who do sin are slave of sin. Poion is present active participal meaning continuing in sin - Western tradition leave out - tes hamartias
35  δὲ δοῦλος οὐ μένει ἐν τῇ οἰκίᾳ εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα·
υἱὸς μένει εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα. But the one who is a slave does not remain in the house to forever. The son remains for ever. Robertson makes interesting contrast between Moses as servant and Christ as the son. Heb. 3:5 and Numbers 12:7
36 ἐὰν οὖν  υἱὸς ὑμᾶς ἐλευθερώσῃὄντως ἐλεύθεροι ἔσεσθε. Therefore if the son shall make you free, you will be free in fact. Condition of the 3rd class with 1st aorist active subjunctive. ontos really, indeed old adverb, Luke 23:34.
37 οἶδα ὅτι σπέρμα Ἀβραάμ ἐστε· ἀλλὰ ζητεῖτέ με ἀποκτεῖναι
ὅτι  λόγος  ἐμὸς οὐ χωρεῖ ἐν ὑμῖν. I know that you are the seed of Abraham, but you desire to kill me, because my word does not remain (penetrate) in you. Old verb choreo, no room. Robertson uses "free course" but that does not seem right. Ties now Jerusalem with Galilee 6:60-66
38 ἐγὼ  ἑώρακα παρὰ τῷ πατρὶ λαλῶ· καὶ ὑμεῖς
οὖν  ἠκούσατε παρὰ τοῦ πατρὸς ποιεῖτε. I speak which I see from the Father, and you do that which you hear from the father. Locative case of pater and article to show possession (common idiom) by the side of my father?Rob.  In both translations your is added to the Jews to show difference in fathers. Is this common addition of copyist? ???
39 ἀπεκρίθησαν καὶ εἶπαν αὐτῷ·  πατὴρ ἡμῶν
Ἀβραάμ ἐστινλέγει αὐτοῖς Ἰησοῦς· εἰ τέκνα τοῦ
Ἀβραάμ ἐστετὰ ἔργα τοῦ Ἀβραὰμ ἐποιεῖτε· They answered and said to him, "Our father is Abraham.  Jesus said to them, "If you are children of Abraham, do the works of Abraham." Their response does show that the two fathers are different but not that they understood Jesus' father as God. Condition of first class believing the first part to be true.
