John 7:25-53 Translation
ἐστιν ὃν ζητοῦσιν ἀποκτεῖναι; Therefore some from Jerusalem said,
"Is this not the one who they desire to kill?"
μή
ποτε ἀληθῶς ἔγνωσαν οἱ ἄρχοντες ὅτι οὗτός ἐστιν ὁ Χριστός;
And behold he speaks openly and they say nothing to him.
Perhaps truly the rulers do not know that is one is the Christ.
But we know from where this one comes,
but when Christ comes, no man knows when he is.
ὑμεῖς οὐκ οἴδατε· Therefore Jesus called out in the temple
teaching and saying, "you yet know me and where I am from,
and from myself I have not come, but it is from the one who is true,
who sent me who you do not know.
I know him that from him I am and also he sent me. Here in the KJV
and from some manuscripts "apestalen" is perfect. apestalken. Not notated
as a variant by GNT or Westcott. Note to DTS. (Dyer)
Therefore they were seeking
to seize him and no one casted him from the temple, because his hour
had not come. Constant talk of his hour, time coming. John 2, 7 et al? -
The appointed time had control over Jesus. Destiny, not the world around us, has control.
31 Πολλοὶ δὲ ἐπίστευσαν ἐκ τοῦ ὄχλου εἰς αὐτόν, καὶ ἔλεγον· ὁ Χριστὸς ὅταν ἔλθῃ μὴ πλείονα σημεῖα ποιήσει ὧν οὗτος ποιεῖ; And many believed out of the crowd in him, and they said, The Christ when he comes will he not do more signs than which this one does?
The Pharisees heard the murmuring of the crowd these thing concerning him, and the rulers and the Pharisees sent assistants to seize him.
Therefore Jesus said, "Yet a little time I am with you and I go to the one who sent me."
You will seek me and you will not find (me) and where I am you are not able to come. The (me) is variant - looks like it should be argued in? Probably left with ( ) to show the balance of the argument.
35 εἶπον οὖν οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι πρὸς ἑαυτούς· ποῦ μέλλει οὗτος πορεύεσθαι, ὅτι οὐχ εὑρήσομεν αὐτόν; μὴ εἰς τὴν διασπορὰν τῶν Ἑλλήνων μέλλει πορεύεσθαι καὶ διδάσκειν τοὺς Ἕλληνας; Therefore the Jews said to themselves, "Where will he go that we can not find him? Will he go into the diaspora of the Gentiles and teach the Gentiles? Ironically it happened. Negative question, expecting a negative response which we know became a positive one because they would not accept his teaching."Diaspora" from Diaspiero - scatter apart - Plutarch, LXX and NT- eis ten diasporan ton Hellenon - Objective genitive translated among.
36 τίς ἐστιν ὁ λόγος οὗτος ὃν εἶπεν· ζητήσετέ με καὶ οὐχ εὑρήσετέ, καὶ ὅπου εἰμὶ ἐγὼ ὑμεῖς οὐ δύνασθε ἐλθεῖν; What is this word of which he speaks, "You will seek me and you will not find (me) and where I am you are not able to come? Troubled over this word - Peter also - 13:37
And on the last great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out saying "If person is thirsty, let him come and drink. Lev.33:36 - If any one ... 3rd class condition. On each of the seven preceding days water was drawn in a golden pitcher from the pool of Siloam and carried in procession to the temple and offered by the priests as the singers chanted Isa. 12:3: “With joy shall ye draw water out of the wells of salvation.” “It is uncertain whether the libations were made upon the eighth day. If they were not made, the significant cessation of the striking rite on this one day of the feast would give a still more fitting occasion for the words” (Westcott).
The one who believes in me, as the scriptures said, out of his stomach will flow rivers of living waters. Very interesting argument here as who's belly the flow of living water comes even a possible mistranslation of Aramaic from belly to fountain. Interesting because personal experience of the scriptures make plain what Jesus was talking about. (See blog)
And this he said concerning the Spirit which those who believed in him were about to receive, For the spirit was not yet because Jesus had not been glorified. The copyist and translators have trouble with this verse. GNT keeps in the ho instead of the hou as the relative pronoun, Robertson uses the "hou" claiming a drawing to the genitive of the spirit instead of the nominative "ho". Also the participle falls under examination concerning the aorist and present. both seemingly close but Metzger claims the aorist being replaced by copyist with future as here. GNT again has the aorist.
Therefore (some - tines - supplied Robertson) hearing from the crowd this word said. "this was the true prophet."
41 ἄλλοι ἔλεγον· οὗτός ἐστιν ὁ Χριστός· (ἄλλ)οι (de) ἔλεγον· μὴ γὰρ ἐκ τῆς Γαλιλαίας ὁ Χριστὸς ἔρχεται; Others said "this is the Christ". Others said, "For is the Christ out of Galilee?" Variant reading here. Probably alloi added. - Me - expecting a negative answer.
42 οὐχ ἡ γραφὴ εἶπεν ὅτι ἐκ τοῦ σπέρματος Δαυεὶδ καὶ ἀπὸ Βηθλεὲμ τῆς κώμης ὅπου ἦν Δαυείδ, ὁ Χριστὸς ἔρχεται; Does not the scripture say that our of the seed of David and from the village of Bethlehem where David was, the Christ is to come? Micah 5:2, exact same as Matt. 2:6.
43 σχίσμα οὖν ἐγένετο ἐν τῷ ὄχλῳ δι’ αὐτόν· Therefore a division began in the people because of it.
But some of them desired to seize him, but no one laid hands on him.
45 Ἦλθον οὖν οἱ ὑπηρέται πρὸς τοὺς ἀρχιερεῖς καὶ Φαρισαίους, καὶ εἶπον αὐτοῖς ἐκεῖνοι, δια τί οὐκ ἠγάγετε αὐτόν; Therefore the attendants came to the chief priest and Pharisees and they said to these, Why have you not brought him? They were shocked at this turn of events. They may have been waiting to interrogate him right then.
The attendants answered, "never has a man spoke thus, as this man speaks. Notice that the "big city" boys had the same response to Jesus' words as the Galileans.
47 ἀπεκρίθησαν αὐτοῖς οἱ Φαρισαῖοι· μὴ καὶ ὑμεῖς πεπλάνησθε; The Pharisees answered them,"Have you also been deceived?" Expecting a negative answer.
48 μή τις ἐκ τῶν ἀρχόντων ἐπίστευσεν εἰς αὐτὸν ἢ ἐκ τῶν Φαρισαίων; Have some of the rulers or of the Pharisees believed in him?
But these people who are not knowing the law are cursed. "ho oxlos houtos" These people. Robertson suggest a condescending attitude toward Galileans as being like clot-hoppers.
50 λέγει Νικόδημος πρὸς αὐτούς, εἷς ὢν ἐξ αὐτῶν· Nicodemus said to them, one who is of them.
Confusion on this verse. "By night" KJV is not genuine. Phrase oJ e∆lqw˝n pro;ß aujto;n (to;) provteron - not added here but seen in the GNT is considered genuine. Nick sticking up for Christ is bold. The use of the present adds drama to the action.
51 μὴ ὁ νόμος ἡμῶν κρίνειτὸν ἄνθρωπον ἐὰν μὴ ἀκούσῃ πρῶτον παρ’ αὐτοῦ καὶ γνῷ τί ποιεῖ;
Does Our law judges a man except he is first hear him and knows what he did?
They answered and said to him, "Are you one of the Galileans? Search and see if any prophet arises out of Galilee.
And everyone went to his own house. This verse and through 8:12 (the passage concerning the woman taken in adultery) is certainly not a genuine part of John’s Gospel. The oldest and best MSS. (Aleph A B C L W) do not have it. It first appears in Codex Bezae.
