John 8:12-20 - Translation

12 Πάλιν οὖν αὐτοῖς ἐλάλησεν Ἰησοῦς λέγων·
 ἐγώ εἰμι τὸ φῶς τοῦ κόσμου·  ἀκολουθῶν ἐμοὶ
 οὐ μὴ περιπατήσῃ ἐν τῇ σκοτίᾳ ,ἀλλ’ ἕξει τὸ φῶς 
τῆς ζωῆς. Therefore again Jesus spoke to them saying, 
I am the light of the world. The one who follows me will not
walk in the darkness, but has the light of life. Much argument has followed 
this verse as to its placement. Now commonly accepted it came 
after verse 7:52. 53 and following to 8:11 are spurious. But have
been canonized. The proof of its veracity as scripture being the constant use and referral of many
to the woman caught in adultery. The application to our time is 
undeniable. 
13 εἶπον οὖν αὐτῷ οἱ Φαρισαῖοι· 
σὺ περὶ σεαυτοῦ μαρτυρεῖς· μαρτυρία σου 
οὐκ ἔστιν ἀληθήςTherefore the Pharisees
said to him, "You witness concerning yourself. Your witness
is not true." Mishnah, Kethuboth 2.9, Rabbinic rule not to witness 
about yourself."Not man can give evidence for himself". (Brown/Robertson) When we brag is this witness about ourselves?  One of John's themes is to point to witnesses 
about the Christ.
14 ἀπεκρίθη Ἰησοῦς καὶ εἶπεν 
αὐτοῖςκἂν ἐγὼ μαρτυρῶ περὶ ἐμαυτοῦἀληθής 
ἐστιν  μαρτυρία μουὅτι οἶδα πόθεν ἦλθον 
καὶ ποῦ ὑπάγω· ὑμεῖς οὐκ οἴδατε πόθεν ἔρχομαι 
 ποῦ ὑπάγωJesus answered and said to them, "even if  I witness 
concerning myself, my witness is of the truth, because I know 
where I come and where I go. You  do not know  where 
I come or where I go." 3rd class conditional phrase, Kan - even if
present active subjunctive. 
15 ὑμεῖς κατὰ τὴν σάρκα κρίνετεἐγὼ 
οὐ κρίνω οὐδένα"You judge according
to the flesh,  I do not judge anyone." Great statement and follow up to the adulterous woman. oudeva = ou de eis - no of one - Paul uses this term "according to the flesh"  2 Corinthians 5:16; 1 Cor. 1:26.  Jesus in vii warns against judging according to appearance. 
16 καὶ ἐὰν κρίνω δὲ ἐγώ
 κρίσις  ἐμὴ ἀληθινή ἐστινὅτι μόνος οὐκ εἰμί
ἀλλ’ ἐγὼ καὶ  πέμψας με pater. " But if I judge, my judgement is true, 
because I am not alone but I and the father who sent me." Pater is omitted elision
at the end. Aorist participles no augment on participles - Here also the famous ego eimi is a pattern that is used in Tabernacles celebrations when walking around the alter, "I and He" referring to the people and God. Another name for God. - Charles Dodd.(1865~)
17 καὶ ἐν τῷ νόμῳ δὲ τῷ 
ὑμετέρῳ γεγραμμένον ἐστὶν ὅτι δύο ἀνθρώπων 
 μαρτυρία ἀληθής ἐστιν. And it is written  in your law that the testimony of two men is true. 
Your law has hostile connotations? Christian vs. Jewish.
18 ἐγώ εἰμι  μαρτυρῶν περὶ ἐμαυτοῦκαὶ μαρτυρεῖ
 περὶ ἐμοῦ  πέμψας με πατήρ. I am the one who bears witness concerning myself, and the Father, the one who sent me, bears witness. 
19 ἔλεγον οὖν αὐτῷ· ποῦ ἔστιν  πατήρ σου; ἀπεκρίθη 
Ἰησοῦς· οὔτε ἐμὲ οἴδατε οὔτε τὸν πατέρα μου· εἰ ἐμὲ ᾔδειτε
καὶ τὸν πατέρα μου ἂν ᾔδειτε Therefore they said to him, "Where is your Father?" Jesus answered, "Neither you don not know me, nor my Father. If you would have known me, you would have known my Father." Interestingly the Pharisees ask where is your father? Augustine says Patrem Christi carnaliter acceperunt, thinking since Christ used anthropon he was talking about earthly father. 
20 ταῦτα τὰ ῥήματα ἐλάλησεν ἐν τῷ 
γαζοφυλακίῳ διδάσκων ἐν τῷ ἱερῷ· 
καὶ οὐδεὶς ἐπίασεν αὐτόνὅτι οὔπω 
ἐληλύθει  ὥρα αὐτοῦ. These words he spoke in the treasury, while teaching in the temple. And no one seized him, because his hour had not yet come. Discussion about locale leaves us in the area of the treasury a place or court of women? Mark 12;41 Luke 21:1 - Bernard says it abutted the Court of the Women. the word may have Persian origin gaza meaning treasure, last part guard. Robertson
