Literary Note: The thread of Abraham holds this discourse together. First Jesus is talking to those Jews who believe in him. Then it quickly decenigrates to who is their father and then they want to kill jesus. They say jesus is a bastard, has a devil, they want to kill him. Jesus says they are son of Abraham, sons of the devil,
The argument seems to function around who seed they are. See blog
But now you desire to kill me, a man who
has spoken the truth to you, which he heard from God. These things
Abraham did not do. Robertson has "but" now standing against the Jews. "a person (one) ..." in accusative case in apposition to me.
You do the works of your father. They said to him
We were not born of evil, wickedness, We have one father, (even) God. Here interesting possibility that the Pharisees are referring to Jesus as the Bastard son of Mary. In response to v 38.
Jesus said to them, if God is your father, you would love me. For I come from and out of him. For I came not of myself, but the one who sent me. 2nd Class condition - with implications that failure to love Jesus is proof that God is not their father. Historical event 2nd aorist - I come from the father.
43 δια τί τὴν λαλιὰν τὴν ἐμὴν οὐ γινώσκετε;
Why do you not know(understand) my speech?
Because you are not able to hear my word. Here speech has more to do with the way Jesus is talking than with the subject matter, the logos. It could be since the Pharisees thought Galileans to "country" they may have be stumbling over Jesus' speech. "This hick"
Your are of your father the devil and the lusts of your father
you desire to do. That one was a murderer from the beginning, and he does not
stand in the truth, because the truth is not in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks
form his own, because he is a lie and the father of it. Robertson seems to think antecedent is not the devil, but the Pharisees?
And because I speak the truth, you do not believe me. pisteueo takes a dative D.O.
46 τίς ἐξ ὑμῶν ἐλέγχει με περὶ ἁμαρτίας;
εἰ ἀλήθειαν λέγω, δια τί ὑμεῖς οὐ πιστεύετέ μοι; Who of you convict me of sin? If I speak the truth, Because why do you not believe me?
The one who is from God hears the word of God. But this thing you do can not hear, because you are not from God.
καὶ δαιμόνιον ἔχεις; The Jews answered and said to him, "We say not well that you are a Samaritan and you have a demon? Great attack. Tired of saying he has a demon, charge that he is a Samaritan. It is the S. word of the Middle east.
Jesus answered, "I do not have a demon, but I honor my Father, and you dishonor me." Over looks S. and makes great connection back to the His Father.
But I do not desire my glory, there is one who desires and judges.
Truly, Truly, I say to you, if someone may fulfills my word, He may not see death forever.
θανάτου εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα· The Jews said to him, Now we know that you have a demon. Abraham died and the prophets, and you say, if someone keeps my word he will not taste death forever.
τίνα σεαυτὸν ποιεῖς; Your are not greater than our father Abraham, who die? And the prophets died, whom do you make yourself?
ὁ δοξάζων με, ὃν ὑμεῖς λέγετε ὅτι θεὸς ἡμῶν ἐστιν, Jesus answered, "If I will glory myself, the glory is not mine, It is my father who is the one who glorifies me, whom you say that is my God.
And you do not know him, but I know him. And I said that I do not know him, I would be a liar as you, but I know him and I keep his word.
Abraham your father rejoiced that he may see my day, and he saw it and he was glad.
ἔτη οὔπω ἔχεις καὶ Ἀβραὰμ ἑώρακας; Therefore the Jews said to him, "You are yet 50 years old and Abraham saw you?"
Jesus said to them, truly, truly I say to you, Before Abraham was born, I am. Jesus holds their feet to the fire concerning their Father and who He is. Smacking them down with the final blow of an "I am" statement. Not only saying that He existed before Abraham but that he is God. I am. Exodus reference. It is on this reference that they started looking for stones.
Therefore they took up stones in order to throw at him. But Jesus hid and went out of the temple.
