John 6:41-58

NOTE: There is controversy over whether this is "eucharistic" teaching or a demand for dedication.


41. Therefore the Jews murmured concerning him that he said " I am, the bread which is coming out heaven." 
John 6:41 π =Egovgguzon ou\n oiÔ =Ioudaiæoi peri… aujtou: o{ti ei«pen` e∆gw◊ ei∆mi oJ a⁄rtoß oJ kataba˝ß e∆k tou: oujranou:,  Here the Jews murmuring like with Moses in Wilderness, LXX same verb. It is an onomatopoetic word like cooing of doves or buzzing of bees. Less arguing with one another and more murmuring against what Jesus said. (Robertson).
And they said, "Is this not Jesus the son of Joseph? Do we not know the father and the mother? How now does he say that he has come down out of heaven? 
John 6:42 kai… e“legon` oujc ou|tovß e∆stin =Ihsou:ß oJ uiÔo;ß =Iwshvf, ou| hJmeiæß oi“damen to;n pate√ra kai… th;n mhte√ra~ pwÇß nu:n le√gei o{ti e∆k tou: oujranou: katabe√bhka~ One thing to note here it sounds as if the town folk knew of Joseph and it sounds like he is still alive. Further, the term carpenter is also used for mason. They have a large synagogue in Capernaum all of stone. 
JJJJJesus answered and said to them, do not murmur with one another.
John 6:43 a˙pekri√qh =Ihsou:ß kai… ei«pen aujtoiæß` mh; gogguvzete met= a˙llhvlwn.
For no one is able to come to me except the father who sent me draws him and I will raise him up in the last day. 
John 6:44 oujdei…ß duvnatai e∆lqeiæn provß me e∆a˝n mh; oJ path;r oJ pe√myaß me eÔlkuvsh≥ aujtovn, ka˙gw˝ a˙nasthvsw aujto;n e∆n th≥: e∆sca◊th≥ hJme√ra/. This elkuse(i) aorist subjuctive is used among other things as a moral drawing. Notice that the Father initiates the salvation? Maybe a little Calvinistic. Free will is still at play I would add. Christ is defining salvation as commitment level. Not just believing in Him but "continually partaking of him".
It is written in the prophets, "and they all will be taught of the Lord." All who hear and learn from the father come to me. 
John 6:45 e“stin gegramme√non e∆n toiæß profhvtaiß` kai… e“sontai pa◊nteß didaktoi… qeou:` paÇß oJ a˙kouvsaß para˝ tou: patro;ß kai… maqw˝n e“rcetai pro;ß e∆me√. All who hear.
Not that a certain one has seen the father, except the who is from God, this one has seen the father.  eoraken, is the perfect - reduplication. 2 oo = w

Truly, truly I say to you, the one who believes has ever lasting life.

I am the bread of life.
John 6:48 =Egw◊ ei∆mi oJ a⁄rtoß th:ß zwh:ß. Another "I am" from John. Brown claims exegesis of Greek for emphasis but still strangely connects it to the Exodus "I am" of LXX. Since so much of this conversation is OT orientated, it seems naturally connected to Exodus xv. In fact older theologian (1930"s) Miss Guilding claims this event happen around the Passover and traces the Jewish lectionary for this time to be from Exodus iii to xvi and first parts of Genesis. She shows remarkable parallels in Jesus' discourse (Brown, Anchor).
Your fathers ate manna in the desert and died.
John 6:49 oiÔ pate√reß uJmwÇn e“fagon e∆n th≥: e∆rhvmw/ to; ma◊nna kai… a˙pe√qanon` Interestingly Jesus does not include himself in their lineage. YOUR fathers, Not OUR fathers. His Father of course is God. Subtle connection with heaven in following verse.
This one is the bread which came out of heaven, that a certan one can eat and never die.
John 6:50 ou|tovß e∆stin oJ a⁄rtoß oJ e∆k tou: oujranou: katabai√nwn, i”na tiß e∆x aujtou: fa◊gh≥ kai… mh; a˙poqa◊nh≥. 
I am the living bread  which comes down out of heaven. If certain one may eat of this bread he lives into eternity, and also the bread which I will give is my flesh for the life of the world.
John 6:51 e∆gw◊ ei∆mi oJ a⁄rtoß oJ zwÇn oJ e∆k tou: oujranou: kataba◊ß` e∆a◊n tiß fa◊gh≥ e∆k touvtou tou: a⁄rtou zhvsei ei∆ß to;n ai∆wÇna, kai… oJ a⁄rtoß de… o}n e∆gw˝ dw◊sw hJ sa◊rx mouv e∆stin uJpe…r th:ß tou: kovsmou zwh:ß. "I am". Conditional phrase. Also 2 attributive the bread the living It is not only the bread of life but the living bread, subtle change from zous to zon, present participle.
The Jews argued with one another saying,"How is this one able to give to us the (his) flesh to eat?"
John 6:52 π =Ema◊conto ou\n pro;ß a˙llhvlouß oiÔ =Ioudaiæoi le√gonteß` pwÇß duvnatai ou|toß hJmiæn dou:nai th;n sa◊rka (aujtou:) fageiæn~ 
Therefore Jesus said to them, "truly, truly I say to you, except you eat the flesh of the son of man and drink his blood, you have no life in yourself. 
John 6:53 ei«pen ou\n aujtoiæß oJ =Ihsou:ß` a˙mh;n a˙mh;n le√gw uJmiæn, e∆a˝n mh; fa◊ghte th;n sa◊rka tou: uiÔou: tou: a˙nqrw◊pou kai… pi√hte aujtou: to; ai»ma, oujk e“cete zwh;n e∆n eÔautoiæß. The difficulty here pointed out by Brown is the OT reference to these phrases, "eat my flesh" and "drink my blood" are all in reference to polemical phrases about the enemy or trash talk, and a name for Satan, "flesh eater". This verse is also used for giving Eucharist to infants
The one who eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life. And I will raise him on the last day. 
John 6:54 oJ trw◊gwn mou th;n sa◊rka kai… pi√nwn mou to; ai»ma e“cei zwh;n ai∆w◊nion, ka˙gw˝ a˙nasthvsw aujto;n th≥: e∆sca◊th≥ hJme√ra/. Death and life connection. 'Jesus has here presented to this Galilean multitude the central fact of his atoning death for the spiritual life of the world.' Robertson.
For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink.
John 6:55 hJ ga˝r sa◊rx mou a˙lhqhvß e∆stin brwÇsiß, kai… to; ai»ma◊ mou a˙lhqhvß e∆stin povsiß. brosis equal to broma (a thing eaten) therefore - food.
The one who eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me and I in him.
John 6:56 oJ trw◊gwn mou th;n sa◊rka kai… pi√nwn mou to; ai»ma e∆n e∆moi… me√nei ka˙gw˝ e∆n aujtw/Ç. 
And also the living Father sent me and I live through the Father, and the one who eats me this one also will live through me.
John 6:57 kaqw˝ß a˙pe√steile√n me oJ zwÇn path;r ka˙gw˝ zwÇ dia˝ to;n pate√ra, kai… oJ trw◊gwn me ka˙keiænoß zhvsei di= e∆me√. Few places in the NT where Father is described as "living".
This one is the bread which came down out of heaven, just as the fathers ate and died, the one who eats this bread will live forever - into eternity.
John 6:58 ou|tovß e∆stin oJ a⁄rtoß oJ e∆x oujranou: kataba◊ß, ouj kaqw˝ß e“fagon oiÔ pate√reß kai… a˙pe√qanon` oJ trw◊gwn tou:ton to;n a⁄rton zhvsei ei∆ß to;n ai∆wÇna. 
These things he said in the synagogue teaching in Capernaum.

John 6:1-40 Translatons



Nathan Simpson Jesus Walking on Water 
1 After these things Jesus came to the region of the sea of Galilee of Tiberias. After these things indefinite time. Could have been a long time between 5 and 6.
2. And a great crowd followed him, because they saw the signs he made on the ones being sick. Followed, descriptive imperfect active
3. And Jesus went up into the mountain and there he sat with his disciples.
4. And it was near the pascha, the feast of the Jews. John is fond of notes of time.
5. When Jesus then lifted up (his) eyes and saw that the great crowd was come to him, he said to Philip "where can we buy enough loaves to feed these? Purpose clause.
6. And these thing he said testing him. For he knew what he was about to do. Robertson says this is an indirect question.
7. Philip answered him, two hundred denarius is not enough that each to take a little. final clause.
8. One of his disciples, Andrew the brother of Simon Peter, said to him,
9. There is a little boy who has 5 bread loaves and two fish, but what is this among so many? diminative of pais - small boy - osparia - only fish in NT
10. Jesus said "Make the men sit down. And there was much grass in that place. Therefore the men sat down in number about five thousand. adverb of general reference.
11. Therefore Jesus took the bread and having given thanks and gave to those sitting (reclining) and from the fish as many as wanted?
12. And After they were full, he said to his disciples,"gather the fragments that are left over (abound), in order that no thing may not be lost." (Singular verb subjunctive it may be lost). were filled - passive aorist indicative (effective?)
13. Therefore they gathered and filled 12 baskets of fragments out of the 5 bread of Barley which remained over and above to them that had eaten.

14. Therefore the men who saw the sign which he made said that of a truth this is the prophet

15. Therefore when Jesus knew that they were about to come and snatch him away in order to make (him) king, he departed again into the mountain, himself alone. Purpose hina clause. Robertson claims that disciples were sympathetic with crowd, this is why Jesus sends them hurriedly away.??
16 And while it was evening his disciples came down upon the lake.
17. And After they embarked in the boat they came across the sea into caperaum and it was already dark and Jesus had not yet come to them. The tenses in these verses are very - graphic - Pluperfect use as an add on - not past perfect as Robertson claim - CHECK OUT. Clark points out two interesting thing. 1. contrary winds did not allow disciples to reach the destination Christ wanted. 2. They landed in Genesaret - they may have hugged the coast on the west waiting for Jesus.?
18. And the Sea awoke by a great wind which was blowing. Genitive absolute, "a great wind blowing".
19. And After they had rowed twenty-five or thirty stadiums, they saw Jesus walking upon the Sea, and he came near the boat, and they were afraid. This last part Robertson is a sudden change in the historical narrative.
20. And he said to them, "I am He", Be not afraid. One of John's ego eimi - matching in the LXX to the Sinai - with moses.
21. Therefore they willingly received Him into the boat, and immediately the boat came on the land to which they were going.
22. The day following, the crowd which had been stooding across the lake, saw that the other small boat was not there, except the one also save that one whereinto his disciples were entered, and that Jesus did not enter with his disciples into the boat, but that his disciples were gone away alone; Noticing 3 things
23. Others came in small boats from Tiberius near the place where they ate the bread giving thanks to the Lord. Parenthetical explanation of previous comment.
24. When the crowd saw that Jesus was not there, neither his disciples, they embarked into the small boat and came into Capernaum desiring Jesus. Saw that Jesus was not there... present indicative - indirect discourse.
25. And after finding him across the lake they said to him, Rabbi, when have you come here.
26. P -Jesus answered and said to them, verly, verly I said to you, you desire me not because you saw signs, but that you ate from the bread and you were filled.
27. Work not for the meat that which is destroyed but for the meat that remains in life everlasting, which the son of man will give to you. For this one God the Father sealed. the father, the God, 2 attributive position or apposition?
28. Therefore they said to him, "What must we do in order that we may work the works of God? poiomen - deliberative subjuctive - What must we do as a habit? Final clause hina indicating sincerity.
 29. Jesus answered and said to them."this is the work of God, that you may believe on the one that he sent.
30.Therefore they said to him, "Therefore what signs do you do, that we may see and may believe in you? What works?
31.Our fathers at the manna in the desert, as also it is written, "bread out of heaven was given to them to eat."
32 Therefore Jesus said to them, "Truly, truly I say to you, Moses did not give to you the bread out of heaven, but my father gives to you the true bread out of heaven.
Second attributive position for true bread separated by "out of heaven". Present active 3 sing. he gives.
33. For the bread of God is that which came out of heaven and gives life to the world.
34. Therefore they said to him, "Lord, Always give to us this bread." dos - imperative aorist.
35. Jesus said to them, "I am the bread of life, the one who comes to me may not be hungry and the one who beieves in me will not ever thirst. Famous "I am" from John.
36. But I say to you that you also have seen me but you do not believe me.
37. All that the Fathers gives to me shall come to me, and he that comes to me I will no way throw out.
38. For I came down from heaven, not to do my will, but the will of the one who sent me. 2 pred. and add hina clause after but for final with present - keep on doing the will of him who sent me.
39. And this is the will of one who sent me, that all which was given me I have not lost of his , but I will raise him in the last day.
40. For this is the will of my Father, that every one who sees the Son, and the one who believes on him may have everlasting life and I will raise him up on the last day.

John 6:1-40

24 ὅτε οὖν εἶδεν  ὄχλος ὅτι Ἰησοῦς οὐκ

αὐτοὶ εἰς τὰ πλοιάρια καὶ ἦλθον εἰς 
Καφαρναοὺμ ζητοῦντες τὸνἸησοῦν

καὶ  πιστεύων εἰς ἐμὲ οὐ μὴ διψήσει
 πώποτε36 ἀλλ’εἶπον ὑμῖν ὅτι καὶ ἑωράκατέ
 καὶ οὐ πιστεύετε37 πᾶν  δίδωσίν μοι 
 πατὴρ πρὸς ἐμὲ ἥξεικαὶτὸν ἐρχόμενον 
πρὸς ἐμὲ οὐ μὴ ἐκβάλω ἔξω38 ὅτι καταβέβηκα 
ἀπὸ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ οὐχ ἵνα ποιήσω τὸ θέλημα 
τὸ ἐμὸν ἀλλὰ τὸ θέλημα τοῦ πέμψαντός με·

 ἵνα πᾶν  δέδωκέν μοι μὴ ἀπολέσω ἐξ αὐτοῦ

40 τοῦτο γάρ ἐστιν τὸ θέλημα τοῦ πατρός μου
ἵνα πᾶς  θεωρῶν τὸν υἱὸν καὶ πιστεύωνεἰς 
αὐτὸν ἔχῃ ζωὴν αἰώνιον καὶ ἀναστήσω 
αὐτὸν ἐγὼ ἐν τῇ ἐσχάτῃ ἡμέρᾳ.
