John 1
43. On the next day (morrow) He (Jesus implied) desired to come into Galilee and find Philip. And Jesus said to him, "follow me". Straight forward.
44. And Philip was from Bethesda, out of the city of Andrew and Peter. One may notice right away that Peter seems to have two homes. Besides Bethesda, Peter is said by Mark to live in Capernaum by the sea. Some want to harmonize the two by saying Peter was probably born in Bethesda using apo and ek as being the harmonizing prepositions. Makes a little sense if the need is felt to harmonize the two.
45. Philip found Nathan and said to him, We have found the one who Moses wrote about in the law and prophets, Jesus son of Joseph from Nazareth. We should be able to tell right away that Nathan is the direct object by its accusative ending. Interesting note: Brown notes that of course "son of Joseph" is the correct and almost always used denoting father. However Mark 6: 3 says "son of Mary" and is strange. Brown thinks may be an insinuation that Jesus was illegitimate.
46. Nathan said to him, "Out of Nazareth does anything good be?" and Philip said to him " come and see".
47. And Jesus beholding Nathan coming to him said concerning him, behold an Israelite in whom there is no deceit. It may be noted here that although he made the "no guile" list, Nathaniel did not make any of the disciples lists. A lot of suggestions have been made about him, that he is really Matthew, or Bartholomew, but all are very speculative.
48. And Nathaniel said to him, " From where do you know me?" And Jesus answered and said to him " from when Philip called you when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.
49. Nathan answered and said to him, "Rabbi, you are the son of God, you are the king of Israel." There are variant readings here, but there is very little ink spilled over this verse.
50. Jesus answered and said to him, because I said to you, that I saw you under the fig tree, you believe? You will see greater things than these.
51. And he said to him, verily, verily I say to you, "you will see the heavens opening and the Angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of man ."
